Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (ACT), the parent company of the Circle K convenience-store chain, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire GetGo Café + Markets from Giant Eagle, Inc. GetGo, known for its food-first convenience store experience, operates approximately 270 locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, employing around 3,500 people. This acquisition is expected to close in 2025, pending regulatory approval.
Giant Eagle, a supermarket chain based in Pittsburgh, decided to sell its convenience store division as part of a strategic move to focus more on its core supermarket and pharmacy businesses. Giant Eagle’s CEO, Bill Artman, expressed enthusiasm for the sale, highlighting that it will strengthen the company and allow it to prioritize investments in areas crucial to its growth. He also emphasized that the transaction aligns well with Giant Eagle’s longstanding tradition of making bold business decisions. ACT, headquartered in Laval, Quebec, operates over 7,100 stores in the United States, primarily under the Circle K banner.
The acquisition of GetGo marks a significant step for ACT in expanding its footprint in the foodservice sector. The company has a history of aggressive mergers and acquisitions and views GetGo as a strategic addition that will enhance its foodservice offerings beyond the traditional convenience store model. A key aspect of the deal is the continuation of the myPerks loyalty program, which has been highly popular among Giant Eagle and GetGo customers. Both companies have agreed to maintain and potentially expand this program, which will continue to offer value and discounts to customers across their locations. With this acquisition, ACT continues to build on its reputation as a global leader in convenience and mobility, while Giant Eagle refocuses on its core operations, ensuring sustained growth and customer satisfaction.
