Amazon Coming in 2nd as the Largest U.S. Grocer

It is no small feat to rank as the second-largest grocer in the U.S., especially when competing against giants like Albertsons and Walmart, both of which operate thousands of stores and banners nationwide. Through its online grocery platform and brick-and-mortar presence with Whole Foods Market, Amazon generated more than $150 billion in grocery sales in 2025.

Of course, Amazon is not new to the grocery space. The company has sold nonperishable grocery items for years, and while concepts like Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go were not runaway successes, they have not deterred Amazon’s ambitions to become a worthy grocery competitor.

During the company’s first-quarter earnings call, Amazon’s President and CEO noted that same-day perishables sales grew “over 40x year-over-year,” adding that customers shopping for same-day perishables are building larger baskets and that Whole Foods Market plans to expand its footprint by an additional 100 locations over the next few years. The shift in Amazon’s grocery business is significant, especially considering that during last year’s Q1 earnings call, grocery was barely mentioned at all.
