It is reported that Amazon Fresh is re-organizing and is eliminating the zone leader role. The zone leader manager had several functions including training employees, posting jobs, and helping customers. Hundreds of Fresh employees have been offered a severance package or other jobs with the company.
Amazon has 44 Fresh stores in the U.S. Amazon Fresh started in 2007 as a delivery only option in 2007. Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market in 2017 and in 2020 opened Fresh stores in the United Kingdom and the U.S.
Karan Girotra, a Cornell Tech professor said, “When Amazon entered this business, their assumption was they could use technology to compensate for their late entry, for their lack of scale and lack of a large physical network,”.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that, “the company would pause the opening of new physical Fresh locations while it reevaluates strategy and tries to find a way to turn Amazon Fresh into a financial success.”
