Online giant, Amazon, has launched its first Amazon Grocery location in a space that mostly served as a coffee shop for Whole Foods Market’s Gold Coast store in Chicago. The store is in a 3,800 square foot location that sits at the escalators that take shoppers up to the Whole Foods Market. The new store will carry 3,500 products and hopes to capture Whole Foods Market shoppers looking to make a quick trip for grocery items, coffee and grab and go meals. The store carries typical grocery items like Coke and Pepsi and other name brand items.
“Customers shopping at Whole Foods Market today are looking for natural and organic products. However, we know that many of them also visit additional grocery stores to grab favorite national grocery brands or household essentials to complete their weekly shop”, Amazon said in a statement. “Through Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go, Whole Foods Market, third party grocery partners, and this new shopping experience, we offer a wide selection of national and local brands plus fresh, high-quality produce, meat and seafood”.
This new concept store comes after Amazon hit pause on grocery in 2023. “We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for customers to shop for groceries, whether on-line or in stores”, said Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin. “We’re testing and learning with a new grocery shopping experience with small-format store from Amazon under the same roof as Whole Foods Market in the One Chicago Building. With this new concept, customers can shop their favorite natural products at Whole Foods Market and get broader product assortment from Amazon all in one trip, saving them time and money”.
Whole Foods Market launched its own experiment in September opening its first small format store, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, in New York City’s Lenox Hill neighborhood. The chain plans more 10,000 square foot stores with sights on locations in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen and East Village neighborhoods.
