Amazon has announced their intention to close all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores to focus on same day fresh grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market stores. Amazon launched its same day fresh delivery service back in August, as customers in more than 1,000 cities could order fresh groceries with same day delivery. The company plans to expand the same day fresh delivery service to 2,300 locations by the end of 2026.
Additionally, the plan includes the conversion of some of the locations into Whole Foods Markets and plans to open more than 100 stores over the next few years. Amazon said that they will continue to test new store concepts with their plan to open their first 230,000 square foot supercenter in suburban Chicago this year. At present, there are 16 Amazon Go stores and 58 Amazon Fresh Stores. In a statement, the company said that”…we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon-branded physical stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large scale expansion. After careful evaluation of the business and how we serve customers, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores”. Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market has also launched a convenience store concept through its Whole Foods Daily Shop. There are now five locations with stores found in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia with five more planned in 2026. Some of the Amazon Go stores could very well end up as Whole Foods Daily Shops.
