Amazon Unveils Dash Cart Upgrade with Interactive In-Store Map

Amazon has rolled out a series of updates to its Dash Cart, introducing new features designed to make grocery shopping faster and more personalized. The enhancements, announced Wednesday, January 8th, were developed in response to customer feedback.

The updated Dash Cart was piloted last year in select Whole Foods Market stores in McKinney, Texas; Reston, Virginia; and Westford, Massachusetts. Amazon reports that more than 90% of customers who used the carts said they were satisfied with the experience. The company plans to expand Dash Cart availability to more than 25 Whole Foods Market locations by the end of the year.

“The response from customers in our initial locations in McKinney, Reston and Westford has been encouraging, and I’m looking forward to hearing feedback as we scale this experience to more communities,” said Jason Buechel, Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores and CEO of Whole Foods Market, in a LinkedIn post.

New Dash Cart features include:

  • A built-in screen that displays item prices and a running total as customers shop
  • Alexa shopping list integration, allowing shoppers to add items at home or on the go and check them off in-store
  • An interactive in-store map that highlights personalized deals on nearby products
  • Real-time receipt updates using AI-powered computer vision and sensor fusion when items are added or removed
  • A redesigned scanner positioned next to the screen for faster responsiveness
  • Dedicated Dash Cart checkout lanes that automatically process payment
  • Expanded payment options to further streamline the shopping experience

In addition to the technology upgrades, Amazon redesigned the physical cart. The new Dash Cart is 25% lighter, offers 40% more capacity, and includes a built-in produce scale. The scale works with on-cart cameras, weight sensors and machine-learning models to ensure accurate pricing for fruits and vegetables placed directly in the cart.
