Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO of Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC), has retired following a distinguished 49-year career with the family-owned business. His retirement, effective March 2nd, 2026, marks the end of an era for the company, which has served communities across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma since 1928.
The grandson of founder W.T. Brookshire, Brookshire spent nearly five decades working across all areas of the business, holding roles including store director, vice president, executive vice president and president before becoming CEO and chairman. He served 20 years as chairman of the board and 10 years as CEO.
“From growing up in this company and watching my grandfather lead the company, to stepping into the shoes myself, it has been the greatest honor to be chairman and CEO of Brookshire Grocery Company,” Brookshire said.
Under his leadership, BGC experienced significant growth and transformation. The company expanded from 152 to more than 220 stores, strengthened its presence across four states and grew banners including Super 1 Foods, Spring Market, Reasor’s and FRESH by Brookshire’s. Brookshire also led efforts to modernize operations through store remodels, new technology and partnerships with national brands, while reinforcing a culture centered on customer service and innovation.
Brookshire’s impact extended well beyond the business. He helped establish the Heroes Flight program, which has provided nearly 600 veterans with all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., and spearheaded the Focus on the Future Scholarship program, awarding more than $1 million to students across over 45 colleges and universities. His industry leadership earned him induction into the Food Industry Hall of Fame in 2020 and the prestigious Sidney R. Rabb Award in 2024.
“BGC’s success has always been driven by our employee-partners, our customers and our communities, and I’m thankful for the support that has carried this company forward for nearly a century,” Brookshire said.
Following his retirement, Chief Operating Officer Jerry LeClair has been named interim CEO. LeClair brings more than 40 years of grocery industry experience and has led key areas of the business, including retail operations, marketing, merchandising, logistics and facility services. The company’s board has initiated a search for a permanent CEO.
“We are incredibly thankful for Brad’s service to BGC,” LeClair said. “His leadership has shaped the company in profound and lasting ways. He has led with integrity, humility, and a genuine care for people, ensuring that BGC continues to thrive while honoring the company’s heritage.”
Brookshire Grocery Company employs more than 17,000 people and serves approximately 175 communities across its four-state footprint. The company plans to honor Brookshire’s legacy and contributions with a special retirement celebration later this spring.
As the company transitions leadership, LeClair emphasized continuity in its mission: “As a team, we will remain focused on serving our customers and supporting our employee-partners.”
