A new supermarket has opened in Downtown Brooklyn, bringing a full-service grocery store to a central stretch of Fulton Street for the first time under The Fresh Grocer banner. The location at 523 Fulton Street occupies space along a busy pedestrian and transit corridor, directly across from the Fulton Mall retail district. It marks the supermarket chain’s first store in New York City. The store encompasses about 18,000 square feet of sales floor and supports roughly 140 jobs for local residents.
Inside, aisles are laid out around core departments that include fresh produce positioned near the entrance and prepared foods, seafood, and floral offerings deeper into the space. A full-service butcher counter and a from scratch bakery stand alongside sections for chilled dairy, frozen goods, and a variety of nationally recognized grocery brands and private label products.
The Brooklyn store is the company’s first to open within the five boroughs, extending its retail presence beyond suburban markets into a dense urban neighborhood. The Brooklyn store’s floor plan reflects a traditional supermarket format adapted to its urban site. Perimeter walls contain service departments and refrigerated cases while center aisles carry packaged goods and dry groceries. Spaces near the front of the store are devoted to grab and go meals and items meant for quick stops. The design intends to cater to foot traffic and to customers who may be combining regular errands with grocery shopping.
The site sits within a retail block that has seen renewed investment and modernization in recent years. The building housing the store underwent renovation ahead of the supermarket’s arrival, and the Fulton Mall area has continued to attract a mix of national and local retail tenants.
Since opening in February 2026, the Fresh Grocer has maintained hours from early morning into the evening to accommodate a range of shopping patterns. Its arrival adds to the grocery options available in Downtown Brooklyn, complementing existing supermarkets and specialty food retailers in the area.
The new Fresh Grocer is operated by Inserra Supermarkets, a family-owned chain based in New Jersey that is part of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative. Inserra also runs a number of ShopRite and Price Rite stores in New Jersey and New York.
