Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) closed four stores across Arkansas and Louisiana on July 24th following what the company described as a comprehensive review of store performance, market conditions and long-term sustainability. The affected locations include Brookshire’s stores in Ashdown, Arkansas, and Rayville and Winnfield, Louisiana, along with a Spring Market store in Grambling, Louisiana. Employees at the impacted stores have been offered opportunities to transfer to nearby locations.
While the closures represent one of the company’s largest rounds of store shutdowns this year, they are part of BGC’s ongoing effort to optimize its store network rather than reduce its presence in the region. Louisiana and Arkansas remain important markets for the retailer, accounting for approximately one-third of its store base. Earlier this year, BGC also closed a store in White Hall, Arkansas, while reopening three remodeled Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods locations in northwest Louisiana, demonstrating its continued investment in stronger-performing stores and communities.
Brookshire Grocery’s strategy reflects a broader trend across the grocery industry as retailers reevaluate their store portfolios in response to rising operating costs, inflation, supply chain pressures and increasing competition. Rather than focusing solely on expansion, many regional grocers are directing investments toward markets with the strongest long-term growth potential while closing locations that no longer align with their business strategy.
Founded in Tyler, Texas, in 1928, Brookshire Grocery Company operates more than 200 stores across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma under the Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market, FRESH by Brookshire’s, Reasor’s and FRESH by Reasor’s banners.
