Central Market Progresses Toward Uptown Dallas Location

After years of delays and revised plans, H-E-B’s Central Market is moving forward with its new location in Uptown Dallas at 3524 McKinney Avenue, a site that formerly housed an Albertsons store. The project, which stalled due to the softer post-COVID commercial market, now emphasizes a standalone design tailored to the area’s needs. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, pending final city approvals.

The new Central Market will feature expanded parking across two levels, a café with a stage for live music, and an open-concept cooking school that doubles as a community space for neighborhood events. This addition aligns with Uptown’s vibrant, walkable environment, offering a mix of grocery staples and local engagement opportunities. As an upscale grocery concept, Central Market aims to provide more than just shopping – it seeks to be a community hub.

Originally planned as part of a $295 million mixed-use project with office, residential, and retail spaces, the concept has evolved to address current market conditions. H-E-B President Stephen Butt stated that the grocer is committed to creatively transforming the location while collaborating with the Uptown community and city officials

This will mark Central Market’s 11th store, enhancing competition in the neighborhood alongside retailers like Whole Foods Market and Tom Thumb. Uptown continues to attract significant commercial and residential development, cementing its role as one of Dallas’s most dynamic areas.
