Century of Celebration: Winn Dixie Commemorates 100 Years

Winn-Dixie is marking its 100th anniversary this September with a blend of nostalgia, community events, and renewed commitment to its service mission. The centennial observance spans the full month, during which the grocer is offering “throwback” pricing on select items via its app and digital coupons, enabling shoppers to access retro discounts tied to Winn-Dixie’s history.

To celebrate, the company is hosting free birthday-bash events at several stores across its Southeast footprint. These gatherings include live music, giveaways, sampling, birthday cake, and promotional gift cards for early arrivals. In line with its legacy of community support, the company is donating $200,000 in honor of the milestone, $100,000 in financial contributions to Feeding America’s hunger relief initiatives and $100,000 worth of food donations to partner food banks across the region. The contribution is tied to Hunger Action Month, reinforcing the grocer’s ongoing role in food security efforts.

Over its century in business, the retailer has weathered economic shifts, restructuring phases, and changing consumer habits. It traces its beginnings to 1925, grew through regional expansion, and faced bankruptcy in 2005 before reorganizing under new ownership. More recently, the company changed hands; in 2024 it was sold to Aldi, and in early 2025 a consortium led by its CEO reacquired it with the intention of renewing investment in the brand. Despite those transitions, leadership emphasizes that the anniversary isn’t merely a look backward, it also serves as a milestone for projecting forward. The company signals continued investment in store operations, technology platforms, and local engagement.

As Winn-Dixie enters its second century, its centennial celebration underlines both historical roots and aspirations for future relevance.
