Co-op Continues Paving Way in Philadelphia

One of Philadelphia’s largest food cooperatives, Weavers Way Co-op, signed a long-term lease to begin development on their fourth location. With the opening targeted for summer 2023, the new store will be located at 328 W Chelten Avenue in the Germantown neighborhood. The location, which once served as an Acme Market, will offer all departments in store, including grab-and-go foods, additional retail space for local Germantown vendors sourced through the Co-op’s Vendor Diversity Program, and a community fridge. Outreach efforts in Germantown will launch shortly to ensure the store carries items that are favored by the local community. Weavers Way plans to hire locally for all positions, including management-level, and is expected to employ between 40 and 50 people. Since first planting roots in Mt. Airy in 1973, the members owned co-op now operates stores in Chestnut Hill and Ambler and continues to grow influence in the discussion on local products, urban agriculture, and access to better quality and healthier foods at affordable prices.
