Couche-Tard’s Giant Gain: GetGo Acquisition Complete

Giant Eagle agreed to sell its entire GetGo Café + Market convenience-store and fueling business, comprising roughly 270 locations and 3,500 employees across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, and Indiana, to Canadian retail giant Alimentation Couche Tard, owner of Circle K. The announcement, made in August 2024, marks a strategic pivot for both companies. Couche Tard confirmed on June 26th, 2025, that it received clearance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, subject to the divestiture of 35 overlapping sites to satisfy antitrust conditions, clearing the way for the deal to close in early July. Once finalized, GetGo will operate as a distinct business unit within Couche Tard’s U.S. operations, headquartered separately from Circle K, while retaining its myPerks loyalty platform, food-centric convenience offerings, and regional brand identity.

Giant Eagle CEO, Bill Artman, emphasized that the divestiture allows the company to concentrate resources on its core supermarket and pharmacy business, enabling investments in remodeling, price cuts, and staff development: “We are energized by the potential for both Giant Eagle and GetGo as a result of this transaction,” he commented. Meanwhile, Couche Tard executives, including CEO Alex Miller and Circle K President Brian Hannasch, highlighted GetGo’s strong customer loyalty, high-quality food service, and cultural fit as primary motivations for acquiring the brand.

Estimated at approximately $1.57 – $1.6 billion, this acquisition adds significant scale to Couche Tard’s North American footprint, complementing its existing 7,000+ Circle K locations and further reinforcing its push into the ready-to-eat and coffee segments. As part of the FTC’s approval, Couche Tard agreed to sell 35 gas stations (34 Circle K and one GetGo) to Majors Management to alleviate concerns over regional fuel-price competition. Employees and shoppers can expect continuity after the sale. Couche Tard has pledged to retain all team members, keep GetGo’s food-first philosophy intact, and maintain the myPerks loyalty program across both chains. Veteran GetGo operations head Mike Maraldo will lead the new unit within Couche Tard’s U.S. network.

This deal reflects a trend in the industry: grocery-centric chains shedding non-core assets to double down on core businesses like food and pharmacy operations, while convenience-store operators like Couche Tard pursue aggressive growth via targeted acquisitions. With GetGo integrated, Couche Tard positions itself to elevate the convenience experience in the eastern U.S., from fresh food offerings to loyalty synergy, while Giant Eagle focuses inward to reinforce its supermarket presence.
