Elm City Market closed its longtime home at 360 State Street in New Haven, Connecticut in October 2024 after its lease expired. CEO Kurt Luttecke explained at the time that the store’s original 10,000 square foot space had become too large, prompting plans to relocate to a more appropriately sized storefront a few blocks away in the emerging Square 10 complex on South Orange and George Streets. As part of the broader redevelopment of the former New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum site, this move positioned Elm City to better serve its urban customer base while leveraging the momentum of downtown renewal.
A sleek, 3,000 square foot Elm City Market quietly re-opened with a soft launch on July 7th, 2025, ahead of a grand opening set for July 11th. The new location offers streamlined but robust offerings, including fresh produce, full-service meat and seafood counters, prepared foods, and a walk-up window for grab and go convenience. A community room enhances its role as a local gathering spot for events, cooking demos, and vendor showcases, retaining much of its neighboring identity even in a smaller footprint. Although the new Elm City Market space is only a third the size of its predecessor, it continues to employ around 30 of the store’s former 40-member team. Free street-level parking supports accessible shopping, and online ordering with same-day delivery is expected to launch in late summer, a sign of renewed community focus and convenience.
Meanwhile, the old Elm City location has been repurposed as Market 360, which officially opened in late May 2025 at State and Chapel Streets. Owned by local grocers Kim and Chris Choe (also operators of Sharon Farm Market), the 10,000 square foot Market 360 features locally sourced produce, meats, seafood, a floral department, pet supplies, home goods, and free parking, filling the grocery gap left behind by Elm City Market’s departure. The concurrent openings of Elm City Market and Market 360 establish a dynamic grocery corridor in downtown New Haven. Elm City’s return in a modernized, efficiently scaled space underscores its adaptability and commitment to local community life. As both retailers settle into their complementary roles, downtown shoppers benefit from greater choice, convenience, and neighborly charm at the heart of Square 10’s evolution.
