After nearly six decades serving Southern Oregon, Sherm’s Thunderbird Markets is entering a new chapter. Owner Steve Olsrud confirmed that the family-owned company’s four stores and Medford warehouse are up for sale. The decision comes as Olsrud, who has led the company for almost 30 years, begins a succession plan to ensure the business continues serving the community with the same commitment and care.
Founded in 1967 by Sherm and Wanda Olsrud, the company began with a single Medford store and grew over the years to include locations in Klamath Falls, Roseburg, and Medford. The Olsrud family became deeply rooted in the region, known not only for quality groceries but also for significant philanthropy supporting local food banks, healthcare, schools, and youth programs such as 4-H and Future Farmers of America.
Steve Olsrud emphasized that while the company is for sale, it remains “business as usual,” with the goal of finding a partner who will uphold the family’s legacy and care for the more than 500 employees. The family’s impact on the community is widely recognized, including major donations to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, the creation of Olsrud Arena at the Expo fairgrounds, and numerous scholarship funds for local students.
Sherm’s Markets’ history reflects generations of family dedication, community support, and a commitment to providing Southern Oregon with trusted, local grocery options. As the company looks toward its next chapter, its legacy of service and philanthropy remains a cornerstone of the region.
