In 1966, Erewhon founders Michio and Aveline Kushi chartered the natural foods scene by selling macrobiotic and organic foods out of a tiny stall that sat below street-level in Boston. The first store of its kind in America, Erewhon soon served as a model for other natural food stores across the nation. In 2011, husband and wife team Tony and Josephine Antoci acquired Erewhon, and continued to develop it into the iconic chain it is today.
