The Giant Company has opened a new supermarket in the Allentown area of Eastern Pennsylvania, unveiling a larger and more modern grocery store within the South Mall shopping complex along Lehigh Street in Salisbury Township. The new store, which opened its doors on November 21st, repurposes the former Bon-Ton department store space, transforming it into a roughly 68,000-square-foot grocery location that replaces the chain’s long-standing supermarket on West Emmaus Avenue after more than three decades of operation there.
The redesigned space reflects both an updated layout and an expanded selection of grocery departments. Produce, meat and seafood sections have broader footprints than at the previous site, and dedicated areas for organics and specialty foods have been incorporated into aisles that unfold from the store’s main entrance. A full-service deli and bakery are positioned near the center of the floor plan, alongside a prominent dairy and dairy alternative section, while a pharmacy and service counters, including a larger beer and wine area, occupy corners of the interior. A notable addition at the Salisbury Township location is the expanded fuel station adjacent to the store entrance. With multiple pumps on site, the station is designed to serve customers arriving by car, complementing the store’s hours of operation, which run from early morning until late evening daily. The combination of a large grocery footprint with fuel services at the edge of the city aims to create a one-stop experience for routine shopping needs.
The site’s transformation from a department store into a modern supermarket was visible throughout the year, with exterior signage and construction progressing incrementally after demolition and renovation work began earlier in 2025. The location sits within the established South Mall retail corridor, an enclosed shopping center that has seen a mix of tenants evolve over time, and Giant’s new lease on the former anchor space marks one of the most substantial changes to the property in recent years. Transitioning away from the older Emmaus Avenue location also involved operational shifts for staff who previously worked at that store, as inventory systems, checkout stations and customer service counters were reconfigured for the newer, larger footprint.
The former store closed on November 20th, one day before the new South Mall supermarket opened. With expanded parking and dedicated spaces for online order pick up the store’s design reflects evolving consumer patterns, combining traditional in-store browsing with conveniences like grocery pickup and in-store pharmacy services. The new Allentown area Giant Co stands as a substantial retail development within Salisbury Township’s commercial landscape, repurposing a long-vacant anchor space into a fresh grocery destination and setting a new benchmark for supermarket scale in the region.
