Grocery Purchases via Mobile Apps – On the Rise

Over the last year, mobile app downloads grew to 255 billion (11% increase YOY) and 4.1 trillion (9% increase YOY) in hours spent. The Data.ai data analytics found that while consumer spending slowed, the need for mobile apps grew.

The food and grocery sectors have seen a steady increase and growth in app usage, which started at the beginning of COVID-19. Data.ai analytics found that “Among the top 15 shopping-related keywords by U.S. iPhone search volume, nearly half are for brick-and-mortar retailers. Grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and Kroger have clearly found an opportunity in search ads bidding by targeting big brick-and-mortar retailers with groceries.” While Instacart is ranking at No. 4 in the U.S. Food & Drink category for app downloads, Whole Foods Market app was at the top with 40% of the segment when using “Costco” as the keyword.
