H-E-B to Remediate Landfill in Buda with New Store Development

H-E-B has announced plans to build a new supermarket in Buda, Texas. The project will transform a long-dormant landfill site into a modern retail destination through a partnership with local government agencies.

Under the agreement, H-E-B will receive more than $20 million in incentives to help offset the cost of remediating the land and making it safe for development. The grocer will also fund roadway improvements surrounding the new store. The 30-year incentive package will be supported through sales and property tax rebates generated by the project. In addition, H-E-B has committed to sourcing construction materials locally whenever possible.

Construction on the new store is expected to begin this year, though an opening timeline has not yet been announced.

“This is a defining moment for our community,” said Buda Mayor Lee Urbanovsky. “By taking land that once symbolized limitation and turning it into a source of jobs, commerce, and community pride, we are writing the next chapter of Buda’s story.”

The project follows a zoning change approved by the Buda City Council in December 2025, clearing the way for development. H-E-B had previously explored building on the landfill site nearly two decades ago but deferred plans at the time due to the high cost of remediation.
