H-E-B has unveiled ambitious plans for growth in the greater Austin, Texas, area, combining new store construction, major renovations, and community investments to support the region’s rapid development. The retailer’s efforts include enhancing underserved areas, creating jobs, and addressing critical issues like housing affordability.
H-E-B has announced 12 major projects for the Austin area this year, including six new stores and six renovations. These projects will create over 4,000 jobs while improving the shopping experience for customers.
The plans include a new store in East Austin at McKinney Falls Parkway and William Cannon with an opening planned for late 2027. This store will address the needs of a growing, underserved community. H-E-B recently opened its third Pflugerville store, featuring the area’s first True Texas BBQ. Additionally, construction has begun on a 106,000-square-foot store in Manor, expected to open in 2025. Significant upgrades were completed at the Tech Ridge store, while plans are underway for the Ed Bluestein location, with work expected to start in 2026. Stores in Kyle, Bastrop, Georgetown, and San Marcos are also slated for updates or openings by 2026. The South Congress location opened on December 4th. This 145,000-square-foot multi-level store includes dining areas, a vast product selection, and above-ground parking for 500 vehicles.
Recognizing Austin’s housing affordability crisis, H-E-B has pledged $1 million to Austin Habitat for Humanity to support two affordable housing projects. One in Persimmon Point near the planned McKinney Falls store, this project will include 126 units. The second is planned for Whisper Valley, South of the Manor store, this development will initially feature about 50 single-family homes. “This $1 million gift from H-E-B is a monumental contribution to the future of Austin Habitat for Humanity,” said Michele Anderson, CEO of Austin Habitat for Humanity. “It’s a commitment to helping hard-working families achieve the dream of homeownership and building strong, vibrant neighborhoods.” Over the past five years, H-E-B has donated nearly $50 million to Austin-area nonprofits, emphasizing its dedication to the region’s growth and well-being.
While H-E-B evaluates additional sites, including a potential sale of its Del Valle property back to developers, the company remains focused on expanding its reach and serving more Texans. As Cathy Harm, H-E-B’s SVP of Central Texas Region, stated, “We are incredibly excited to continue providing the greater Austin area with stores that are new, expanded, and remodeled.”
