Hy-Vee Acquires Strack & Van Til

Hy-Vee is moving eastward announcing their plans to purchase northwest Indiana based Strack & Van Til Food Market’s 22 grocery stores. This will jumpstart Hy-Vee push east and compliment the stores that the chain had already planned in the Indianapolis area. Both chains are privately owned and operated. Forbes magazine ranks West Des Moines, Iowa based Hy-Vee as the 38th largest private company in the United States with 300 supermarkets, 75,000 employees and annual sales of $13 billion.

Early indications are that Strack & Van Til will retain their logo and identity. “Strack & Van Til customer centric focus and company vision to make life easier aligns with Hy-Vee’s values and growth strategy” said Hy-Vee CEO Jermey Gosch. “We look forward to welcoming Strack & Van Til employees into the Hy-Vee Family in the coming weeks”.

Stack & Van Til was founded in 1929 by Ernie Strack who later partnered with Nick Van Til to open their first combined store in 1930. In 1997, the families sold their stake in the grocery chain to Central Grocers.
