Kroger to Open Three Marketplace Stores in Dallas Fort Worth

H-E-B has dominated the news cycle in recent months in regard to North Texas grocery expansion; however, Kroger is ramping up new store openings to compete. The retailer announced three new Kroger Marketplace stores, their version of a super store, which will open in Fort Worth, Plano and Melissa in 2024. They will be the first new-build stores to open in the Dallas Fort Worth area since Kroger opened a McKinney location on North Lake Forest Drive in 2019. In addition to full-service grocery and pharmacy, Kroger’s Marketplace format offers multi-department stores with expanded general merchandise, including outdoor living, electronics, home goods, apparel, and toys. Kroger Marketplace differs from the traditional store format in that it is designed to give customers a “one-stop shopping” experience within 100,000 to 130,000 square feet, roughly three-quarters the size of an average Walmart Supercenter. “We are excited to bring these stores to areas with booming growth and a need for access to fresh food and essential items,” Kroger’s Keith Shoemaker. Kroger has more than 100 locations in North and East Texas, making up about half of the grocer’s 200 locations across the state.

The new locations will be located at:

  • The northeast corner of Highway 287 and E. Bonds Ranch Road in Fort Worth. It is worth noting that this is close to a new H-E-B store under construction. The new Kroger store here will be 122,000 square feet and have an additional 34,000 square feet of space for services and restaurants plus three 1-acre pads.
  • Northwest corner of Sam Rayburn Tollway and Washington Drive in Melissa. This is another location that H-E-B will soon open. H-E-B has purchased almost 43 acres, mainly on the east side of U.S. Highway 75 just north of Highway 121.
  • 9700 Coit Road in Plano. This site of an existing Kroger will be renovated and upgraded and reopen as a Kroger Marketplace.
