Kroger has announced plans to construct two new Kroger Marketplace stores in North Texas, with groundbreaking set for 2025. The new locations will be in Little Elm and the Sendera Ranch community in Fort Worth, though the exact addresses have yet to be disclosed. Kroger’s Marketplace stores, known for their larger footprints ranging from 100,000 to 130,000 square feet, offer a wider array of merchandise than traditional grocery stores. In addition to groceries, these stores feature products such as outdoor living equipment, electronics, and home goods.
This announcement follows the opening of a Kroger Marketplace in Melissa, Texas this past October. Another Marketplace location is already planned for Fort Worth, at East Bonds Ranch Road and State Highway 287, with an anticipated opening later in 2025. These expansions reinforce Kroger’s strong presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where the company operates over 104 stores.
Despite its growth initiatives, Kroger’s recent attempt to merge with Albertsons, another major grocery chain in North Texas primarily operating under the Tom Thumb banner, faced significant regulatory hurdles. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) blocked the $24.6 billion merger, citing concerns about reduced competition and potential negative impacts on consumers, including higher prices and fewer choices.
The proposed merger would have created one of the largest grocery companies in the U.S., consolidating two major players in an already competitive market. Critics of the deal argued it would give the combined entity excessive market power, potentially leading to store closures in areas where both chains currently operate, job losses, and diminished local competition.
The failed merger highlights ongoing challenges for the grocery industry, where balancing expansion with regulatory compliance remains critical. While Kroger has shifted its focus back to growing its individual operations, the implications of the blocked merger continue to reverberate through the industry, shaping strategies for other chains considering consolidation.
