Popular Germany-based retailer, Lidl, continues to expand its footprint in New York with plans to open its second Manhattan store that will be part of a mixed-income apartment building in the Chelsea section. Expected to open in early 2026, the 23,000 square-foot store will offer the discount grocer’s familiar product assortment inclusive of bakery, fresh produce, floral, meats and seafood sections, as well as other everyday grocery essentials. The mixed-use development will feature 188 units of residential space and is being built under the Affordable NY Program with 30% of its units reserved for low-and-middle income New Yorkers. Demolition on-site is scheduled to begin in May and construction is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2023.
Lidl’s first Manhattan store opened in Harlem in February 2022 with positive feedback from the community. Founded in 1973, the global grocer operates over 11,000 stores across Europe and the United States. First arriving to the U.S. in 2017, there are more than 170 stores across nine East Coast states. Lidl continues to focus on offering premium products at a non-premium price by sourcing high quality suppliers and eliminating any unnecessary costs – such as restocking shelves in the boxes product arrives in and implementing a “bring your own bag” policy.
