Market Basket Distributes Bonuses to Express Gratitude

Arthur T. Demoulas, owner of Market Basket, is expressing gratitude to his employees with unexpected bonus checks, marking 10 years since significant protests and walkouts. In the summer of 2014, thousands of employees rallied in support of Demoulas, who was dismissed by the Market Basket board amid a family conflict with his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas. This led to empty shelves and customer boycotts as supporters rallied for the popular executive’s reinstatement. After weeks of demonstrations, Demoulas successfully acquired the company for approximately $1.6 billion. Now, he is acknowledging the dedication and hard work of Market Basket staff. In a message to employees, he stated, “The hallmark of our company is people taking care of people with dignity and respect. As we reflect on the extraordinary events of 2014, it was our customers, associates, and business partners who stood together to uphold our company’s culture.”

Based in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Market Basket is known for its low prices and commitment to customer service. Founded in 1917, the company operates over 80 stores across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Market Basket prides itself on a strong community focus and maintaining a culture of respect and support for both employees and customers.
