After 44 years in its longtime home, Market Basket has reopened a reinvented store in North Andover that seeks to blend familiarity with fresh features. On the evening of Thursday, August 21st, the original location at 350 Winthrop Avenue closed its doors for the final time. By 7:00 A.M. the next morning, a brand-new, 92,000-square-foot store began greeting customers just steps away. The new facility is significantly larger, roughly 30% to 40% more space, than its predecessor, enabling Market Basket to expand its offerings. New amenities include a specialty butcher, an expanded prepared foods section, a coffee and ice cream bar with seating, and a larger kitchen for in-house meals and sandwiches.
Market Basket didn’t simply relocate, it moved laterally within the same shopping plaza, swapping spaces with the former Kohl’s. The vacated Market Basket site will be repurposed for Kohl’s and specialty retail shops. The chain invested approximately $60 million in the project. Staffing levels have increased from the old store, the new location employs about 450 people, with 75 to 100 added to support the expanded kitchen, cafe, and other new departments.
The reopening comes amid a backdrop of corporate challenges. In recent months, the company has contended with internal conflicts in its leadership ranks, with questions around board direction and the status of Chief Executive Arthur T. Demoulas. With this move, Market Basket continues its presence in North Andover under a refreshed format. Its enhanced footprint and upgraded services aim to support ongoing operations in a competitive retail environment.
