Market of Choice has signed a letter of intent to acquire Basics Market. If approved, Basics would become MOC’s 13th store overall and its fifth in the Portland area. The deal would also mark MOC’s second Portland-area expansion in the last year, following the opening of its Hillsboro store last May.
Basics Market opened its first store in 2018 with a 40,000-square-foot location in Aloha, Oregon. At its peak, Basics operated six locations across Portland and the surrounding area. However, due to various challenges, the company closed all but one of its stores by 2021. The last remaining location was the Hillsdale store, which opened in 2020 taking over the former Food Front Co-op site.
Market of Choice plans to keep the Hillsdale store operating throughout the transition to maintain continuity for both customers and employees. Pending final approval, the transition is expected to take 3–4 months, with leadership emphasizing a smooth operational handoff and no immediate changes anticipated. This will be a small format grocery location for Market of Choice.
President Zach Wright (son of former CEO Rick Wright, who passed away last year) praised the retailer’s local roots, saying, “Basics Market has built something special by staying committed to serving the Hillsdale community, delivering exceptional high-quality food, and investing in an outstanding team.”
