New Giant Philly Store Opens as Heirloom Market Closes

The Giant Co. is marking a significant milestone with the opening of its newest store in Philadelphia, located at 1001-29 South Broad Street at the corner of Washington Avenue. Set to open on December 13th at 8:00 A.M., the 40,000-square-foot location is poised to serve the grocery needs of the South Philadelphia community. The store will operate from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., seven days a week, and will provide over 100 full- and part-time jobs.

John Ruane, president of The Giant Co., highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to the city, stating, “Since opening our first Philadelphia store in 2011, we have continued to offer convenience for city residents’ grocery needs, combined with the freshness, value, and quality they have come to expect from Giant.” The new store aims to elevate the shopping experience with modern décor, expanded product variety, and a team focused on customer satisfaction.

As part of the opening celebration, the first 150 customers will receive a Giant reusable shopping bag filled with product samples and grand-opening discounts. The new South Broad store will offer a range of amenities, including a large, market-feel produce department with organic options, a full-service deli, bakery, and floral sections, as well as a selection of beer and wine. The store will also feature a hot food bar, an in-store sushi chef, and a specialty cheese case. Customers will be able to park in an underground garage, with a convenient drop-off loop for taxi or rideshare service.

However, the opening of the new South Broad store coincides with the closure of Giant’s Heirloom Market at 801 Market St., which will shut its doors on December 28th. The 32,000-square-foot Heirloom store, which opened in December 2021, struggled to meet expectations and faced challenges in the neighborhood. Ruane described the closure as a difficult but necessary business decision after efforts to improve performance. The company had hoped the Market Street location would serve the growing residential population in the area, but despite these efforts, it no longer made sense to continue operations there. The closure of the Heirloom store will impact 61 employees, who will be offered positions at other Giant locations in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, Giant continues to expand its presence in the city, with the South Broad store representing a key part of the company’s growth strategy.
