Oregon Supermarkets Are Having a Moment

The Oregon supermarket industry is projected to reach $11.7 billion in 2025. This growth is largely driven by shifting demographics and a rising population. While much of the state is benefiting from this boom, Portland stands out, ranking among the top 20 markets nationwide.

Despite rising prices and ongoing economic uncertainty, grocery shopping habits are evolving rather than declining. Although foot traffic has decreased slightly, consumers are making more frequent trips and focusing on staple grocery needs. Value remains a top priority, with shoppers increasingly drawn to deep discounts and promotions – leading many to frequent bargain retailers like Grocery Outlet.

Grocery Outlet isn’t the only major player in this competitive landscape. National chains like Fred Meyer and Safeway continue to hold strong positions, but face stiff competition from regional players such as New Seasons and Market of Choice, which differentiate themselves through specialty offerings and unique shopping experiences.

Go-to-market strategies vary across the state’s diverse grocery landscape. In Madras, a new Mexican supermarket has opened in the former Thriftway location, which closed last year. This ethnic-focused concept is a strategic fit for the area, where Latinos make up more than a third of the population. It marks the seventh such location in Oregon. New Seasons Market is also expanding, having recently opened its 22nd store in the Tanasbourne neighborhood of Hillsboro. This is their fourth new location in the past three years. The store employs 120 Oregonians and, as always, features a mix of natural, organic, conventional, and specialty products.

Elsewhere, 1st Choice Market is preparing to open a new store in Lincoln City, taking over a former Bi-Mart location on the Oregon Coast. Meanwhile, Asian supermarkets are also experiencing significant growth. The recently opened Hong Phat Supercenter in Portland is one example—offering both wholesale and retail options across 125,000 square feet. The store features a wide variety of specialty groceries, not only from Asian cuisines but also including Latino, Middle Eastern, and American products.

It’s exciting to witness the continued expansion and diversification of Oregon’s supermarket landscape, with retailers offering increasingly tailored and innovative shopping experiences to meet the needs of Oregon consumers.
