On Wednesday July 9th, Prairie Food Coop opened its doors in Lombard to serve the far Western Suburbs of Chicago. The member owned grocery store features locally sourced food, organic offerings and prepared grab and go options.
Located in Lombard’s largest shopping complex, Eastgate Shopping Center, the store looks forward to a family shopper in addition to a large amount of walk in business. One of the largest and busiest DMV facilities is located in the same complex which should provide walk in trade. After raising more than 4 million from local investors, Prairie Food Coop opened.
The co-op provides cheese, bakery, meat, beverages and organic groceries. What differentiates Prairie Food Co-op from traditional grocery outlets is that all the items are obtained from local farmers and vendors. Wine, beer and liquor are also available through local distilleries. Health wellness and body care items are also available at the co-op.
The 7,500 square foot store looks to employ 50 people and be highly involved in the communities’ activities and functions. The store contains five grocery aisles, 12 feet of scoop and gravity bin bulk options, 10 feet of refrigerated dairy, eight frozen doors, two frozen display bunkers, and five dry grocery endcaps. An eight foot grab and go cooler provides beverages and refrigerated items and a small, prepared food station provides quick grab and go options.
With much excitement from community officials, employees and Lombard residents Prairie Food Co-op looks to establish a bond that serves and enhances people’s wellbeing and lifestyles.
