Private Label Reaches Record High In 2023

The Private Label Manufacturers Association announced 21% of all grocery unit sales in 2023 were private or store label items accounting for an all-time high. These increases show private label items catching ground on national brands and account for a large portion of expansion on shelf at retail.

PLMA noted that stores have invested heavily over the past few years in store branded items leading to the large increase. Private label sales accounted for a record $236 billion in 2023. This dollar amount reflects a 5% increase year over year and is up over 30% since 2019.

Private label sales increased 8% the first half of 2023 in comparison to the same time frame in 2022. This number shifted to a 1% increase over the last six months of the year. Total grocery sales reached $1.3 trillion in 2023 with a 3.5% increase over 2022.

PLMA stated that among the 10 private label categories they track only tobacco showed a decrease in 2023. Tobacco numbers sunk more than 16% ending with a total of around 60 billion in sales for 2023. All other categories showed over a 1% increase with beauty showing the highest at 10%.
