Phil Margolis passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, authenticity, and devotion to his family. He was 75.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, and raised in Chicago, Phil was a graduate of Von Steuben High School in Chicago where he was president of his class. He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and went on to pursue a degree in Law at Temple University in Philadelphia.
After law school, before Philadelphia established its own, Phil founded a Juvenile Law Center to protect and advocate for young people in need, embodying his lifelong commitment to justice and philanthropy.
A dedicated entrepreneur, he also built a successful Natural Foods Distributorship, Neshaminy Vally, in Bucks County with his brother, Gene, exemplifying hard work, integrity and a deep commitment to those he loved. During this time, he became president of the Organic Trade Association and was a driving force in the Organic Movement.
Beyond his professional achievements, Phil had many interests, including playing cards with his group of buddies, playing the clarinet, tending to his garden, growing organic produce on his Ivyland property and helping his partner, Susan, run her Ross Mill Farm. Also, a proud Chicagoan, his heart belonged to Philadelphia sports, cheering on the Eagles and Phillies with unwavering loyalty. Additionally, a true connoisseur of fine cigars, he found joy in lively conversation with his family and friends.
His generosity, compassion and witty sense of humor will be dearly missed by his family, including his son, Nathan Margolis, sister Norma Margolis, brother Gene Margolis and wife Susan, nephew Matthew Margolis, niece Rebecca Margolis and his longtime partner Susan Magidson, as well as countless friends and colleagues who were inspired by his generosity, intelligence, and warmth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Guardian Foundation, Pig Placement Network or any charity or cause in honor of his dedication to giving back. His spirit, wisdom, and kindness will live on in all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately on March 1st.
