Rouses Markets Drops Pennies, Adopts Cash Rounding Policy

Rouses Markets is phasing out pennies at checkout, introducing a new rounding policy for cash transactions as the United States winds down penny production.

Under the policy that favors shoppers, cash totals will be rounded up to the nearest nickel. For example, if a customer is owed 91 cents, they’ll receive 95 cents; if the amount is 47 cents, it will be rounded up to 50 cents. Electronic and card payments will continue to be charged to the exact amount.

The move comes as retailers nationwide face penny shortages following the U.S. Mint’s halt in production. Similar rounding practices have already been adopted in other countries, including Canada, which eliminated its penny in 2013 without affecting pricing accuracy.

Rouses Markets said the change simplifies cash handling at checkout while ensuring customers benefit from the transition.

Founded in Louisiana’s Houma and Thibodaux regions, Rouses has grown into a regional grocery chain with locations across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
