San Antonio Launches Insulin Subsidy Program with H-E-B
H-E-B and the City of San Antonio have introduced a program that provides up to $100 in coverage for insulin prescriptions, aiming to assist individuals struggling with the high cost of diabetes treatment. The the Diabetes Insulin Assistance Program is available to all residents of San Antonio and Bexar County who face challenges affording insulin, regardless of whether they have insurance. Additionally, free delivery is offered to those living within a 15-mile radius of participating H-E-B locations.
With more than 8 million Americans estimated to be using insulin today at a cost of nearly $6,000 annually per person, insulin costs (before rebates) account for roughly $48 billion (20%) of the direct medical costs of diabetics. In some cases, insulin can cost up to $1,000 per month per person. In addition to supporting individuals who struggle with the cost of diabetes insulin prescriptions, the Diabetes Insulin Assistance Program aims to raise awareness about the no-cost diabetes self-management workshops offered by the City’s Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health).
