Self-Checkout Soars

Retailers are restructuring their check-out options while consumer habits shift. Currently, the United States is the largest self-checkout market in the world. This trend is being driven by supermarket chains and c-stores. Many different types of self-checkouts are manufactured, some that only accept digital payments. A large concern continues to be shrinkage. Some retailers have adjusted their basket size for the self-checkout to help address the challenge. Walmart, Dollar General and Five Below have removed or scaled back to address shrinkage.

Nonetheless, self-checkout continues to thrive and expand. This year, self-checkout experienced a 12% growth and continues an upward trend. Global installations of self-checkout terminals is expected to reach 2 million by 2029, per report.
