The independent grocery company, once widely known as Southeastern Grocers, is now legally operating under the name The Winn Dixie Company as of early 2026, marking a defined shift in its corporate identity and store branding. The transition reflects a multi-stage reshaping of the business footprint that has unfolded over recent months.
For much of its history, Southeastern Grocers served as the parent of several regional supermarket banners in the southeastern United States. Beginning with ownership changes in 2024, the company underwent a sequence of transactions affecting hundreds of retail locations under the Winn-Dixie and Harveys names.
In March 2024, the German discount retailer Aldi completed the purchase of Southeastern Grocers’ portfolio, including its supermarkets across multiple states. Within the span of a year, ownership of many of those grocery locations shifted again. In early 2025, a group of private investors led by company leadership and allied with wholesale supplier C&S Wholesale Grocers acquired approximately 170 former Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores from Aldi. The portfolio included supermarkets and liquor store formats in states such as Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The rebranding to The Winn-Dixie Company consolidates the company’s identity under its century-old banner and aligns legal naming with the familiar retail brand seen by customers. As part of the transition, existing marketing, store signage, and corporate communications are being updated to reflect the Winn-Dixie name. The company also introduced a revised logo and a new tagline aligned with its neighborhood grocery position. Alongside the name change, the company is narrowing its geographic focus. Agreements have been reached to transfer ownership of store locations outside of its core markets, with independent retailers or other grocery operators assuming control of certain stores in states including Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. In some of those markets, clusters of former Winn-Dixie supermarkets are being rebranded under different retail names through planned acquisitions.
The core operating base for The Winn-Dixie Company is centered in Florida and parts of southern Georgia. Within these regions, the revamped banner is integrating acquired stores and remodeling existing locations. New and converted stores are opening on staggered schedules through 2026, including former local grocery markets that have been repurposed to align with the Winn-Dixie format. In parallel with brand consolidation, the broader process of store transitions is continuing across the Southeast, with some locations previously under the Winn-Dixie banner being sold or converted by other grocery chains. These changes result in a patchwork of store identities in markets once wholly served by Southeastern Grocers’ network.
