Spring Cleaning Gets a Natural Upgrade at Natural Grocers

This season, Natural Grocers is making spring cleaning safer and more sustainable. As the nation’s largest family-operated natural and organic grocery retailer, Natural Grocers is once again setting a higher standard—this time with expanded guidelines for household cleaning products.

Originally launched in 2016, Natural Grocers’ household cleaning standards were designed to offer better-for-you alternatives to conventional cleaners. The latest update reflects the growing body of scientific research around indoor air quality and environmental impact.

Now, over 100 ingredients are banned from the cleaning products sold at Natural Grocers. In addition to previously excluded chemicals like synthetic fragrances, chlorine, and phosphates, the new standards also prohibit:

  • Formaldehyde donors
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Ethanolamines
  • Glycol ethers
  • Quaternary ammonium compounds

While federal regulations don’t require full ingredient labeling for cleaning products, Natural Grocers does. Every cleaning product on its shelves must disclose all ingredients clearly on the label. Limited exceptions for proprietary fragrance or enzyme blends are allowed—but only if they meet the company’s strict safety and environmental standards.

“We’ve always believed that cleaning your home shouldn’t come at the expense of your health—or the environment,” said Raquel Isely, Vice President of Marketing at Natural Grocers. “That’s why we’re committed to providing our customers with safe, sustainable choices, and making it easy for them to understand exactly what’s in the products they use every day. These updated standards help our customers make confident, informed decisions, whether they’re shopping for dish soap, fabric softener, or multi-surface cleaner.”

It’s not just what’s inside the bottle that counts. Natural Grocers also emphasizes sustainable packaging, including options made from sugar cane, 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, and recyclable paper or steel.

From ethically sourced ingredients to eco-conscious packaging, Natural Grocers is helping customers make every corner of their home a little cleaner—and a lot healthier.
