Sprouts Invests in Arizona Sun Pond Solar Project

Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. and global technology provider Schneider Electric have inked a landmark tax credit transfer (TCT) in collaboration with U.S. Bank and Longroad Energy, advancing the Sun Pond Solar + Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Maricopa County, Arizona, home to Sprouts’ support office. The agreement marks a significant step in supporting renewable energy development in the communities where the grocer operates.

Schneider Electric Advisory Services served as a strategic advisor to Sprouts, helping streamline the renewable-energy investment process. The Sun Pond project is designed to deliver reliable energy, enhance air quality and strengthen local grid resilience through battery storage. It is also expected to support the regional tax base, generating long-term economic and environmental benefits for Arizona communities.

Sprouts’ investment supports a 111 MWdc solar and 85 MWac/340 MWh storage project projected to power approximately 19,000 homes annually and prevent 145,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Over its lifetime, Sun Pond is expected to contribute more than $30 million in revenue for Arizona schools and communities through long-term leases and tax payments. The project incorporates American-made technology and workforce development, employing more than 200 workers during construction.

“This work is anchored in Sprouts’ purpose of helping people live and eat better,” said Brandon Lombardi, Sprouts’ Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer. “By supporting new renewable-energy projects, we’re taking tangible steps to care for our planet, people and local communities.”

Part of the Longroad Sun Streams Complex, Sun Pond includes an energy storage platform from Fluence, a U.S.-based company, with U.S.-manufactured inverters integrated into the system. Construction has been completed and commercial operations are now underway.

“This deal demonstrates how companies like Sprouts can lead the way in responsible renewables,” said John Powers, VP of Strategic Renewables at Schneider Electric, whose North American headquarters are in Boston. “Through Schneider Electric Advisory Services, we help clients navigate complex negotiations and deliver solutions that align with their climate goals.”

Schneider Electric’s Tax Credit Advisory Services team has facilitated more than $2 billion in tax credit transfers for corporate clients across various clean-energy technologies and credit types.

Sprouts employs approximately 36,000 associates and operates more than 480 stores in 25 states, offering fresh, natural and organic foods. The Phoenix-based grocer ranks No. 52 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer’s 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America.
