Sprouts Seeks New England Expansion

Sprouts Farmers Market is preparing for a larger presence in New England, with plans to open 30 to 40 stores across the region. The Phoenix-based grocery chain has identified New England as an area for future expansion, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island among the states being considered for new locations. Sprouts currently has a limited footprint in the Northeast compared with its larger operations in other parts of the country.

The first announced Massachusetts store is planned for Weymouth and is expected to open in 2028. The location is part of a redevelopment project that will bring new retail space to the area. Additional details, including store addresses and opening dates, have not been released for most future locations. Local filings have also shown proposed Sprouts projects in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Those plans are still moving through the development process, and timing will depend on approvals, construction schedules, and individual site requirements.

Sprouts stores typically range from about 20,000 to 25,000 square feet and carry a mix of fresh foods, grocery staples and specialty items. Produce departments are a major part of the store layout, along with meat and seafood, bakery items, prepared foods, frozen products, vitamins, and supplements. The retailer has also moved toward smaller store designs in recent years. Compared with traditional supermarkets that can exceed 50,000 square feet, newer Sprouts locations are designed to fit into smaller retail spaces while offering a broad selection of grocery products. The company’s arrival will add another grocery option in a region already served by long-standing supermarket chains, independent markets, and specialty food stores.

Shoppers in New England are familiar with natural and organic grocery selections, but Sprouts would bring a retailer that has not previously had a large presence in the area. Sprouts operates more than 450 stores across the United States, with most locations concentrated in western and southern states. For New England communities, the first store openings will depend on individual development timelines. Beyond the Weymouth location and proposed projects that have surfaced in other states, Sprouts has not announced a complete list of future stores.
