Stop & Shop announced plans to close 32 underperforming stores by the end of 2024 as part of its strategy to position itself for future growth. Despite these closures, the company will maintain a robust presence with over 350 stores across five states. Affected employees will be offered opportunities at other locations within the company. President Gordon Reid highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to its associates and communities. The closures, which are expected by November 2nd, 2024, affect locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Stop & Shop will continue to invest in its business through substantial price reductions, store remodels, and enhanced customer experiences both in-store and online.
Since 2018, over 190 stores have been remodeled, and the company plans to apply these successful changes to other locations. The new Boston flagship store, opened last month, exemplifies these improvements. Even with the closures, Stop & Shop remains dedicated to serving its communities through its remaining stores, online shopping, and home delivery services. The company operates nearly 400 stores and employs 58,000 associates, focusing on delivering value through competitive pricing and strong promotions while supporting community initiatives.
