Ahold Delhaize USA has announced that Roger Wheeler, Chief Commercial Officer, took over as Brand President of Stop & Shop, on September 30th, 2024. This appointment comes as current Brand President, Gordon Reid, has announced his plans to retire in mid-2025. “Ahold Delhaize USA’s strength lies in its deep internal leadership, ensuring a smooth transition. Roger, a Massachusetts native with over 30 years of experience in the supermarket industry and nearly 20 years with Ahold Delhaize USA and Stop & Shop, is the ideal candidate to drive the brand forward,” said JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA. “He’s a proven leader, passionate about customer experience, and has a solid track record of building strong organizational cultures that lead to both successful execution and strong financial performance. I’m confident Roger will reposition Stop & Shop and help achieve our Growing Together strategy goals.”
In his most recent role as Chief Commercial and Supply Chain Officer, Roger led initiatives that transformed Ahold Delhaize USA’s commercial capabilities, boosting growth strategies and improving cost efficiencies. His leadership also brought significant advancements in supply chain operations, and he played a key role in the creation of Ahold Delhaize’s services organization. Before that, Roger spent seven years as President of Retail Business Services, where he led major supply chain and IT transformations. He initially joined the company in 2005 as VP of Meat and Seafood at Stop & Shop, having previously held various roles in store and category management.
A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Roger also holds an MBA from Bentley University and is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. “It’s an honor to rejoin Stop & Shop in this capacity,” Roger said. “Having spent a large part of my career with the brand, and being a lifelong customer, I’m passionate about the communities Stop & Shop serves. I’m excited to work with the team to deepen customer loyalty, operate outstanding stores, and provide top-notch service. Together, we’ll continue growing the business, enhance our reputation as an employer of choice, and create excellent experiences for both customers and associates.”
Roger also emphasized Stop & Shop’s focus on long-term investments in pricing and strengthening its value proposition. “I’m eager to collaborate with our teams to deliver this vision, ensuring our customers benefit while maintaining our commitment to the communities we serve.” Gordon Reid, who has led Stop & Shop since 2019 and previously headed Giant Food for six years, will stay on until mid-2025 to support strategic projects during the transition. “I want to express my gratitude to Gordon for his incredible contributions, especially during his time at Stop & Shop,” said Fleeman. “Under his leadership, the brand has seen significant transformations, from store remodels and pricing strategies to the opening of new locations like the Allston Yards store. I look forward to working with him until his retirement.” Reflecting on his time at Stop & Shop, Gordon added, “It’s been a true privilege to lead this brand. I’m deeply thankful for our dedicated associates and proud of all we’ve accomplished. As I step into the next chapter, I wish Roger and the entire team continued success in the years ahead.”
