Stop & Shop will close four additional supermarkets in New Jersey and Connecticut before the end of 2026, extending a series of store reductions that began two years ago. Three of the affected locations are in New Jersey, 553 South Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, 219 Elm Street in Westfield, and 2360 Lakewood Road in Toms River. The fourth is at 215 East Main St. in Clinton, Connecticut. The Clinton supermarket is scheduled to close October 29th, while final operating dates for the three New Jersey stores have not been publicly announced. The Quincy, Massachusetts-based grocer said the four decisions were made individually after reviews of store performance and are not part of another chainwide closure program. Employees at the affected supermarkets will be given opportunities to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations. Customers can continue shopping the stores until their respective closing dates. The locations operate as full-service supermarkets carrying produce, meat, dairy, frozen foods, grocery, and household products.
The latest closures follow a much larger reduction completed in 2024. That year, Stop & Shop identified 32 underperforming supermarkets for closure across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Parent company Ahold Delhaize said those locations were closed by the end of the year. Stop & Shop has continued to make changes elsewhere in the business. Earlier this year, the retailer closed seven e-commerce fulfillment facilities and shifted more online order fulfillment back to its supermarkets. The move put store associates in charge of picking more pickup and delivery orders rather than relying on separate facilities. At the same time, the company has been investing in the stores that remain. More than 30 Stop & Shop locations were remodeled during 2025. Pricing has been another focus. In May, Stop & Shop expanded lower everyday prices to all 137 of its stores in New York and New Jersey, covering thousands of national branded and private label products. Similar price reductions had already been introduced in its Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island markets. The four closures will further reduce their store base that stood at nearly 400 supermarkets before the 2024 cuts. Stop & Shop currently operates more than 350 stores across its Northeast market and employs more than 50,000 associates.
