SUPRMARKT Brings Farm Fresh Food to South Central Los Angeles
South Central Los Angeles was a food desert for years. There were only three markets serving a six-mile radius as many residents had to travel all the way to Manhattan Beach or Mirina Del Rey for fresh food. That all changed in July of 2024 with the opening of SUPRMARKT, which serves as the first vegan grocery store in the area and a place to shop for high quality food and produce. SUPRMRKT started as a pop-up in front of KAOS, an art and education space in Leinart Park. The store is located at 3526 West Slauson Avenue and offers a cozy atmosphere where patrons can relax on the patio or shop for fresh fruit and vegetables and enjoy healthy vegan meals while listening to soft reggae music. Nearly two million Los Angeles residents face food insecurity.
SUPRMAKT owners, Olympia Auset and Imani Cohen have worked together with community leaders to bring good food and healthy habits to their community. Farmers markets are another solution to address food inequity. The Crenshaw Farmers Market, operated by Food Access LA, also brings fresh produce and artisan goods to the area.
