The Fresh Market Expands Footprint in Washinton, D.C.

The Fresh Market announced its plans to grow its footprint in the Washington, D.C., area by opening two additional stores over the next three years. These new stores, which will be located in Reston, Virginia, and Falls Church, Virginia, are set to become anchor tenants in “upscale mixed-use developments,” according to the grocer’s CEO, Jason Potter. The Reston store will be situated at the intersection of Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hill Road, occupying 27,000 square feet on the ground floor of the upcoming Midline at Reston Station project. The development will also feature a range of other businesses, including a fitness and spa center, a bakery, a sushi and steakhouse restaurant, as well as Puttshack and Ebbit House. The Falls Church location will be slightly larger, with approximately 29,000 square feet, located at 101 Haycock Rd. on the ground floor of a future residential complex. This store is scheduled to open in mid-2026. The surrounding area will offer a variety of dining options, cultural venues, a hotel, and outdoor gathering spaces, according to Jon McAvoy, Chief Investment Officer at real estate developer Hoffman & Associates. The Fresh Market emphasized that this expansion into “high-traffic, transit-oriented developments” reflects the company’s increasing focus on integrating into local communities.

Currently, The Fresh Market operates over 160 stores across 22 states. These new locations will join two existing stores in the Washington, D.C., area, one in Alexandria, Virginia, and another in Vienna, Virginia. Last summer, the specialty grocer revealed plans to open 22 new stores over a 24-month period, aiming to expand its footprint by 14%.
