The Fresh Market Shutters Two Stores

Specialty grocery retailer, The Fresh Market, has announced the closure of two store locations: one in Naperville, Illinois, and another in Framingham, Massachusetts. This move is part of a broader portfolio review by the company rather than a broader pullback from new markets. The Naperville store opened at the Westridge Court center in late 2024 but is now slated for closure after less than a year in operation. The company indicated the decision follows its routine evaluation of store performance and inventory turnover. The Framingham store opened in December 2024 in a former big-box retail space and is likewise closing following a WARN notice indicating around 50 employees will be affected.

The Fresh Market operates over 160 stores across 22 states. The brand is known for positioning itself as an upscale market offering fresh produce, gourmet ready-to-eat items, and specialty products, and it traces its founding back to 1982 in Greensboro, North Carolina. In commenting on the closures, the company emphasized that the two locations are the only ones being shuttered at this time, and it remains committed to its growth strategy, including planned openings of new stores in other markets. Factors contributing to the under-performance of these locations may include market saturation, local competition, inflationary cost pressures, and challenges in building brand awareness quickly in new regions.

For Naperville and Framingham, the shutdowns may reflect the difficulty of launching new store concepts in competitive multi-channel grocery environments and within relatively short timeframes. The company’s decision to keep moving forward with other openings suggests that it views these closures as adjustments rather than indicators of a broader retreat.
