The Giant Co. Buyout in Bedford

Two grocery stores in central Pennsylvania are set to change ownership following an agreement that shifts a pair of long-running local businesses into a regional chain’s network. The Giant Company has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire Everett Foodliner in Everett, Pennsylvania and Saxton Market in Saxton, Pennsylvania , both located in Bedford County. The transaction includes the stores along with their real estate and associated grocery and fuel operations. Each location serves a small borough, with the stores positioned along main streets that function as primary retail destinations.

In Everett, the Foodliner sits within a compact downtown grid, while in Saxton the market anchors a similar stretch of low-rise commercial buildings. In both places, the stores operate as full-service grocers in areas with limited nearby alternatives. The acquisition follows decades of ownership by the Appleby family, which has operated the two stores as independent businesses. The agreement transfers operations to a company that runs nearly 200 locations across several Mid-Atlantic states under multiple banners. The transition is expected to include a temporary closure of both stores after the sale is finalized. Each site is scheduled for interior remodeling before reopening under new management later in 2026. Planned work includes updates to selling areas and equipment used for storing and displaying food. More than 100 employees are associated with the two locations.

The ownership change is being handled through a formal notification process tied to the closures, and current workers are expected to be considered for employment when the stores reopen. Within Bedford County, the Everett and Saxton stores fill a role tied to distance and access. Larger supermarkets are not evenly distributed across the area, and smaller boroughs often rely on a single primary grocery store. Both locations function as routine shopping sites for food and household goods within their immediate communities.

For The Giant Company, the acquisition extends an existing presence in nearby parts of Pennsylvania, including stores operating under the Martin’s banner in Altoona, Pennsylvania and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The addition of the two Bedford County locations keeps operations within an established regional footprint. The physical locations of the stores will not change. The transition centers on how the sites are supplied and operated following renovation. Both are expected to reopen later in 2026.
