Tom Thumb Store in North Texas Closes Amid Competition

Tom Thumb, a prominent supermarket chain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a subsidiary of Albertsons Companies, is undergoing strategic adjustments in its North Texas operations. The company announced the closure of its Allen store at 900 W. McDermott Drive, scheduled for on or before July 5th, 2025. This decision affects approximately 75 employees, with pharmacy prescriptions being transferred to the nearby Tom Thumb at 7801 Alma Drive in Plano.

Despite this closure, Tom Thumb continues to invest in the DFW market. In 2024, the company opened three new stores and has broken ground on three additional locations set to open between 2025 and 2026. These new stores are part of developments in rapidly growing areas, including a 63,000-square-foot store in Argyle’s Harvest Town Center, a 59,000-square-foot store in Sunnyvale, and a 50,000-square-foot store in Sanger.

Tom Thumb’s expansion aligns with its parent company, Albertsons Companies, which operates multiple grocery banners across the United States. Albertsons acquired Tom Thumb through its merger with Safeway in 2015, bringing the brand under its Southern Division.

Currently, Tom Thumb operates 67 stores in the DFW area, including 13 in Collin County, alongside 35 Albertsons locations throughout North Texas. The company’s ongoing investments reflect its commitment to serving the evolving needs of the North Texas community.
