Two Grocers Recognized as Best Workplaces for Women

Wegman’s Food Markets Inc. and Publix Super Markets Inc. have been recognized among Fortune’s Top 100 Best Workplaces for Women this year. The list, determined by research partner Great Place to Work, focuses on women’s workplace experiences regarding reaching their full potential and how gender influences those experiences. Wegman’s, led by CEO Colleen Wegman, secured the 22nd spot, with 90% of associates expressing it as a great workplace, compared to 57% in a typical U.S.-based company.

Approximately 53% of Wegmans’ workforce is female, with nearly 32% of executive/manager positions held by women. Publix, positioned at No. 69 on the list, was praised for its commitment to creating an inclusive and advancing culture for all associates. Marcy Benton, Publix’s VP of Human Resources, highlighted the company’s dedication to fostering a culture of inclusion and advancement for its female workforce. Wegman’s, a family-owned company with over 100 stores across several states, has gained recognition for its sustainable practices and ranked No. 37 on Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of top food and consumables retailers in North America.

Publix, an employee-owned and -operated company, operates around 1,300 supermarkets and holds the 12th spot on The PG 100. Publix has been acknowledged as one of the Best Regional Grocery Chains in America and is also recognized as one of the Retailers of the Century by Progressive Grocer. Wegman’s and Publix are the only two grocers to make the Fortune’s list.
