Uncle Giuseppe’s Grows in Greenvale

Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace has opened its largest store yet in Greenvale, New York, bringing the Long Island grocer to a former Stop & Shop on Nassau County’s North Shore. The 58,000-square-foot market at 130 Wheatley Plaza opened August 14th. It is the company’s ninth Long Island location and 13th overall, following the opening of a Bohemia store at Sayville Plaza earlier this year. About 250 employees are expected to work at the Greenvale supermarket. The store fills a space with a long grocery history.

Stop & Shop closed the Greenvale location in November 2024 as part of a larger round of store closures. The supermarket had operated there since 2015, when Stop & Shop acquired the former Pathmark following A&P’s bankruptcy. Uncle Giuseppe’s has reworked the site around its Italian specialty format while retaining the breadth of a full-service supermarket. The Greenvale store includes more than a dozen departments covering conventional grocery and frozen foods alongside fresh meat, seafood, produce, deli, bakery, cheese and prepared foods. Much of the fresh assortment is produced in-store. Customers can find mozzarella made daily, house-made pasta, a scratch bakery, pizza, sushi, and meats cut to order. The prepared foods department offers more than 130 dishes, while additional areas include an espresso bar, candy shop, chopped salad station, and garden center. The meat department carries Sterling Silver and USDA Prime beef, and the seafood counter includes live seafood. Uncle Giuseppe’s also stocks natural and organic products alongside its Italian specialties and traditional supermarket assortment.

The opening continues a busy stretch of expansion for the Melville, New York-based company. Uncle Giuseppe’s opened its first marketplace in East Meadow in 2001 and now operates stores across Long Island, Westchester County, and New Jersey. Another Long Island store is already in development. Uncle Giuseppe’s plans to open in a former King Kullen on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown late this year, which would become its 14th location. The company has also indicated that it is looking beyond New York and New Jersey for future growth. The Greenvale opening gives Uncle Giuseppe’s another large-format location as it marks 25 years since opening its first store. It also returns a supermarket to Wheatley Plaza less than two years after Stop & Shop exited the property.
