United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has introduced an Endless Aisle program that allows retailers to order products outside of its traditional warehouse assortment. The program is integrated into the company’s existing ordering system. Retailers can browse an expanded catalog of items that are not stocked in UNFI distribution centers. When ordered, those products are shipped directly from suppliers rather than through UNFI’s network. The model allows UNFI to offer a broader range of products without carrying additional inventory. It also changes how new items enter the system, removing the requirement for warehouse placement before being made available to retail customers. The expanded assortment includes a mix of emerging and established brands, with a concentration in natural and specialty categories. These products are typically more difficult to scale through conventional distribution due to lower or less predictable demand.
For suppliers, the program provides a way to reach retailers without securing space in UNFI facilities or committing to large initial volumes. Orders are fulfilled on demand, with suppliers responsible for shipping. Retailers continue to place orders through a single platform, but fulfillment differs from standard distribution. Products sourced through Endless Aisle are delivered separately and may have different lead times and shipping costs. The program builds on earlier digital marketplace efforts by UNFI aimed at increasing connections between retailers and suppliers. Endless Aisle places that capability within the routine ordering process rather than as a separate channel.
